Protected Characteristics

Protected Characteristics at Queensmead

It is important that all children gain an understanding of the world they are growing up in.

We support pupils to celebrate diversity as reflected in the wonderful multicultural, multi-faith and multi-ethnic city we live in. Leicester City is acclaimed as the first 'plural' city in the UK and we are proud to be part of this incredible city.

'According to the 2021 Census data, it has emerged as the first plural city in the UK where no ethnic group has a majority'

Our pupils learn about a range of cultures and faiths and show respect for all.

The Equality Act 2010, identifies the ‘protected characteristics’ as:

  • age

  • disability

  • gender reassignment

  • marriage and civil partnership

  • pregnancy and maternity

  • race

  • religion or belief

  • sex

  • sexual orientation

At Queensmead, we pride ourselves on having a well-considered, age and stage appropriate approach to the teaching of the protected characteristics, in order to:

  • eliminate discrimination, harassment, victimisation

  • advance equality of opportunity between persons who share a relevant protected characteristic and persons who do not share it

  • foster good relations between persons who share a relevant protected characteristic and others

This philosophy is an integral part of school life and is embedded into our curriculum via our Route to Resilience work as well as our UNICEF Rights Respecting Silver award.  In addition to this planned approach, we react and respond to any incident as it arises within school, the local, national or global community.
